Kayaking to the Mokulua Islands

What to consider before you put an offshore paddle on your itinerary.

Start with the route, not the destination

The Mokulua Islands are a memorable part of the view from Lanikai. An offshore paddle is a different commitment from a beachside rental. Choose a guided experience if you need instruction, local route knowledge, or help evaluating whether the day suits your ability.

The islands are wildlife habitat

The Mokulua Islets are part of a state seabird sanctuary. Access is restricted, including limits to areas below the high-water mark and a nighttime closure. Keep away from nesting birds, follow signs, and check the current rules and any temporary closures before setting out.

Keep the itinerary flexible

Don’t book an offshore paddle as the only reason to visit Kailua. Give it a weather window and have a shore-based alternative. A guide may change or cancel a route; that’s part of responsible planning.

Before you go

Check Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety and the sanctuary’s current access information. A scenic photograph doesn’t tell you whether a route is appropriate today.
